Southwest Transitway Stage 2Stage 1 of the Southwest Transitway opened in April 2012 and is currently in operation from Downtown to Pembina & Jubilee. The next stage, Stage 2, will extend the Southwest Transitway from Pembina & Jubilee south to the University of Manitoba. The alignment study recommended Alignment 1B, through the Parker Lands and along a Manitoba Hydro transmission corridor. This recommendation was formally adopted by City Council in late 2012. The map below shows the recommended alignment. While longer than a route parallel to Pembina Highway, this routing eliminates a number of at-grade intersection crossings, improving safety and increasing operating speeds. At the same time that Winnipeg Transit was planning Stage 2 of the Southwest Transitway, the Public Works Department was also planning to widen the Pembina Highway Underpass at Jubilee in order to accommodate an additional traffic lane in the northbound direction, and to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle facilities on both sides of Pembina through the Underpass. Because both of these projects involve a substantial amount of work in the same location (Pembina & Jubilee), the best way forward was to bundle them together, and to plan to design and build them at the same time as part of one major project. Public EngagementPublic engagement is a critical component of this study. We want to make sure everyone knows what is happening, and we also want to hear your opinions. Landmark Planning & Design has been in contact with residents, property owners and business owners in the immediate vicinity of the corridor. A series of public Open Houses were held in November 2013 to communicate preliminary transitway concepts and to understand opportunities and constraints associated with this stage of the transitway. The first round of stakeholder and public consultation concluded in early December 2013. A report summarizing what we heard from participants during the first round can be viewed by clicking on the Stakeholder and Public Consultation – Round 1 report.pdf. We have since prepared a draft functional design for the transitway. A second series of stakeholder meetings were carried out, and a second set of Open Houses were held in February 2014, to gather feedback on the draft functional design for the transitway and the active transportation pathways. The final report of the public engagement strategy for the functional design study can be found here: SWT Stage 2 Public Consultation Report – Round 1 and 2.pdf To view the open house material from the February 2014 public open houses see the link below: To view the open house material from the November 2013 public open houses see the link below: As the functional design was nearing completion, a third round of public consultation was initiated in May 2015. Once again, this involved a series of direct stakeholder meetings, followed by an Open House on May 28 to present the functional design to the public.
